When someone dies, there can be a great deal to arrange in a very short space of time. 

Alongside the practical decisions, families are also trying to process their loss and find the right way to say goodbye. 

Choosing a funeral celebrant in Dundee is an important part of that process. The person leading the ceremony will help gather the memories, write the tribute and guide everyone through the service on the day.

What does a funeral celebrant do? 

A funeral celebrant works with the family to create and conduct a ceremony that reflects the person who has died. This begins with taking time to listen. 

During our meeting, we will talk about your loved one’s life, personality, relationships and the memories that matter most. You might share stories about their family, work, interests, favourite places, sense of humour, familiar sayings or the little everyday things that made them who they were.

I then bring everything together to write a personal funeral ceremony that feels true to the person you are remembering. 

Can a celebrant-led funeral include religion? Yes. 

As an independent funeral celebrant, I can include religious or spiritual elements within the ceremony if that is right for your loved one and your family. 

This could include hymns, prayers, blessings, scripture or another meaningful tradition. 

The ceremony can also be entirely non-religious, or combine religious and spiritual elements with personal stories, music, poetry and moments of reflection.

There is no belief system to sign up to and no set formula to follow.

 The ceremony will be shaped around the person being remembered and the wishes of those closest to them.

What happens when we meet?

Most families choose to meet in the comfort of their own home, although we can meet somewhere else if that feels more comfortable. There is no need to prepare anything formally. It can be helpful to have other family members or close friends present, as everyone may remember something different. 

Anyone unable to attend can send memories or words by email for me to include. 

I will gently guide the conversation and make sure we cover both the person’s story and the practical details of the ceremony. 

We can discuss music, readings, poems, family contributions and whether you would like a quiet moment of reflection. 

You will have the opportunity to read the ceremony before the funeral and tell me if anything needs to be added or changed. 

What happens on the day of the funeral?

I arrive in plenty of time, speak with the funeral director and make sure everything is ready before the service begins.

During the ceremony, I guide everyone through each part and deliver your loved one’s story with warmth, clarity and respect. 

Family members or friends are welcome to contribute a reading, poem or personal tribute, but nobody will ever be placed under pressure to speak.

My role is to help the ceremony feel calm, personal and manageable for you and your family.

Where can a celebrant-led funeral take place?

I support families across Dundee, Broughty Ferry and the surrounding areas. 

Ceremonies may take place at a crematorium, funeral home, burial ground, graveside or another suitable venue.

I can also create and conduct memorial services, celebrations of life and separate ceremonies for the interment or scattering of ashes.

What is a Death Doula?

A death doula - sometimes called an end-of-life doula - is a trained, non-medical companion who supports someone approaching the end of life, and their loved ones, with emotional, practical, and spiritual care. 

Unlike medical professionals who focus on treatment, a death doula focuses on the human side of dying: creating comfort, holding space for important conversations, and helping ensure wishes are honoured.

What Does a Death Doula Do?
